Basic Blackjack Strategy

blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games. It is played on a semicircular table that can have anywhere from 5 to 12 players, each of whom place bets using chips that are purchased from the dealer. The game’s objective is to beat the dealer by having a higher unbusted hand. Each player and the dealer are dealt two cards each. The player can ask for more (hit) or stick with their current hand (stand). Once the cards are dealt, the dealer will check her hole card if she is showing a face up and will take any insurance wagers placed by players who have opted to buy it.

In a normal blackjack game, the cards have a value of their number, 10 for the face cards, and either 1 or 11 for an Ace. There are several strategies that can be used to help a player increase their chances of winning, but it takes years of practice and a strong understanding of probability to master these skills. Many players believe that blackjack is a game of chance, but it is not. A study of all the possible combinations of a player’s cards and the dealer’s shows that for every situation there is a correct play, which can be determined by applying basic strategy.

The goal of blackjack is to beat the dealer by having a better hand than the dealer. A player can do this by getting a hand value of 21 or by drawing a higher value than the dealer on their first two cards. The player can also win by making the dealer bust.

To do this, the player must be careful not to exceed 21 or draw a card that causes them to go over, which is called busting. A high card that is not an ace or a king will beat a player’s hand, but a pair of 2s will lose to a dealer’s blackjack, which pays 3:2.

In addition to knowing when to hit or stand, the player must also understand when it is appropriate to double down. This option is available only on a two card hand before another card is drawn. Doubling down allows the player to increase their bet by a set amount and to receive an additional card to their hand. The player is usually allowed to double for any amount up to their original bet, but some casinos restrict the rank of cards that can be split or the number of cards that can be doubled after splitting.

One of the best times to double down is when a player has an initial total of 11, like (6,5) against a dealer’s upcard of 5. This hand is an excellent candidate for doubling because it is likely to improve to a 21 and beat the dealer’s blackjack. This is a very good reason to always double when the opportunity presents itself.
